Science Experiments for Kids

Summary: These science experiments are fun for the whole family, and take minimal setup time.

Science experiments can be fun to do. Most kids have to present for a yearly science fair, but that shouldn’t be the only time in a child’s life to explore some of the natural facets of life.

Weather Balloons

A high altitude weather balloon can be used to test a variety of theories. Attach a soda can to it, for instance, and you can test what atmospheric conditions are necessary to chill the can from room temperature. You can also use a data logging device to record altitude and other data. You can create illustrations that show your balloon’s trajectory, and graphs that document its maximum altitude.

Experiments with Eggs

There are actually a few experiments you can do with just a carton of eggs. For example, you can tell if two cool eggs are hardboiled or not. If you spin the egg, the raw egg should wobble while the other stays still. You can also mix a concentration of salt and water together to test how well an egg floats. You’ll notice that the density of the tap water lets the egg sink, while the salt water causes the egg to float.

Volcano

There are two different methods to create a volcano. The first is the old baking soda and vinegar method, which causes an “eruption” to occur when you mix the two solutions together. You can also create the same effect with a few tabs of mentos and some diet soda. The result sends a geyser high into the air.
